We went along as a family to the new UTC open evening which was held at the Manchester Metropolitan University campus at Crewe. It was really well attended and it was great to be able to see lots of sponsors/partners there with exhibits showing some real-time engineering and interactive displays. There was even a robot! Harry particularly enjoyed the driving simulator – getting a feel of what it is like behind the wheel of a Bentley.
The Principal of the school, Dave Terry, gave a presentation which made us even more excited about the prospect of Harry changing to this school. We were especially impressed with the attitude towards the students as “young professionals”. From what we have learnt so far, students will be mentored and encouraged, and will be putting the knowledge they learn in the classroom to practical use – learning some real skills. I had a brief chat with a Higher Apprentice who had been to a similar UTC before taking on his apprenticeship with Bentley, and it was very interesting to learn about his experience and the number of offers of employment that he received when he finished school. I’d like to take Harry to the next open evening in a few weeks and see if we can meet a couple of the other ambassadors who went to UTCs, to find out more about their
Justine Pridding, parent of UTC applicant.
